General Norman Schwarzkopf

Know to many as Stormin Norman, General Schwarzkopf became a household name as the military leader of the 1991 Persian Gulf War against Saddam Hussein’s military.  Although criticized for supporting ending the war too quickly and the leaving of Saddam Hussein in power, the rest of the world saw him as a charismatic leader as he gave his almost daily press conferences on television.

General Schwarzkopf was a decorated Vietnam veteran and a West Point graduate. He died in Tampa Florida on 27 December 2012.

With thousands of flags, honoring fallen heroes he’s never met

Saw this great story on CBS over the weekend. This needs to me shared with the veteran and military community. Please pass it on via twitter or fb or even word of mouth!

The VCASNY extends a Salute to Larry Eckhardt!

I met SGM Santiago during a Veterans’ Day parade in the Bronx a couple of years ago. While I did not know him as others did, he came across as a good man still doing his duty for “his” veterans and colleagues.

RIP SGM Santiago.

Nathan Hale Day

Nathan Hale

Nathan Hale Statue

On 22 September, 1776 British troops under the command of General William Howe (British Commander in North America) hung Nathan Hale a day after he was caught spying for the Continental Army. Every year a small ceremony is held to remember the man who reportedly said, “I only regret that I have but one life to lose for my country”. The ceremony takes place at City Hall Park, the location where he lost his life 235 years ago. Attending the ceremony were city officials, including Mayor Bloomberg.
